Boos At Michie

I have never heard boos at Michie form either side in 60+ years of Army football!

In fact, I have never heard boos against an Army Team even on the road.

Completely understand the Fordham fans' reaction to the play call.

Perhaps some reasons for the call:

o In JM's mind, the game was not over.
o A teaching moment on finishing. Finishing the play, finishing the game, etc. We have fallen short in 4th Quarters many times.
o Instilling a "killer instinct". "Roll that score way up. They will never want to play us anymore"
o Give Buddy Green something to think about on defending the Tight End

But, having taken a knee on the one yard line, wipes numbers 2 and 3 off, IMO.

Perhaps a better sequence would have been to take the knee. If Fordham called their final timeout then go for it.

Don't like the call. We still don't know how to win (with class).

Army wins All Military Classic to go 2-0

Army made it look tougher than it should have been taking down VMI to win the All Military Classic tournament.

After trailing 52-53 at the half, Army opened up a 13 point lead early in the second half and then let VMI recapture the lead with 5 minutes left in the game before finally pulling ahead to win by 6 points 92-86.

Army was just 15 of 29 from the free throw line, but was 55% from the field and 29% from 3 point range. Wilson led all scorers with 19 that included two clutch free throws to clinch the win, and Plomb added 18 for Army.

A good start, but they'll need to improve at the free throw line if they plan to continue their winning streak.

Is this the Year for the Army Cagers?

I was getting tired of seeing the advertisement for maxexbball basketball camp as the lead post in the basketball forum.

While the early pre-season previews/predictions appear to favor American U. winning the Patriot League for 2014-15, CBSsports.com has at least one of their six commentators picking Army to come out on top.

Wouldn't it be special if the Army team could make it to March Madness this year and break out of he dwindling handful of teams that have never been to the NCAA tournament. It certainly has a greater likelihood of happening than the football team going to a bowl game in 2014. It will definitely be a challenge. There is a great deal of balance across the league this year. There won't be any opportunity for a breather in conference play. Even if Army doesn't win the P-league, they should be fun to watch. While there has been quite a buzz over the direction Jeff Monken promises to take the Army football program, Zach Spiker has presided over five years of steady progress at the helm of Army Men's Basketball.

Besides CBSsports.com, also check out CampusInsiders.com, who are also pointing to Army as a contender for the P-league crown.

Opponents Weeks 10 and 11

I was traveling last week to go to the AF game and didn't have a chance to capture the results of all our opponents, so I've combined weeks 10 and 11 here:

Opponents Weeks 10 and 11

Buffalo (3-6) lost to Ohio (5-5) 14-37 last Wednesday and plays Akron this coming Tuesday. Ohio held Buffalo scoreless for the better part of 3 quarters and racked up a 27-0 lead before allowing Buffalo on the scoreboard with a 12 yard passing TDs. Buffalo's final score was on a 75 yard fumble return.

Stanford (5-4) lost to Oregon (8-1) 16-45 last weekend and had a bye game this weekend. Stanford fought back from an 18 point deficit to close to a 24-16 margin late in the 3d quarter, but back to back rushing TDs put the game out of reach for the Ducks.

Wake Forest (2-7) had a bye week on the 1st and lost to #19 Clemson (7-2) 20-34 Thursday night. The Deacons took an early lead, trailed 20-17 at the half, and tied it up at 20-20 in the third quarter, but Clemson scored 14 unanswered points to clinch the win.

Yale (7-1) downed winless Columbia (0-8) 25-7 to start the month of November and traveled to Rhode Island to beat Brown 45-42 this past Saturday. Yale jumped out to a 22 point lead and then cruised to the win against Columbia. The game against Brown was a seesaw affair, with Brown scoring first and carrying a 20-17 lead at the half. Yale scored twice early in the third quarter to take a 31-20 lead, but Brown closed to within 3 at 38-35 and then the two exchanged scores to give Yale the 3 point win.

Ball State (3-6) lost to NIU (7-2) 35-21 Ball State overcame an early 14-point deficit to pull even at halftime but was ultimately derailed by four turnovers. NIU scored twice on a TD run and a 21 yard pick 6 to take a 28-14 yard lead. Ball State closed to within 7, but NIU scored again with 2 minutes left in the game to seal the win.

Rice (6-3) traveled to Miami on Nov 1 to beat FIU (3-6) 31-17, and then returned home to beat UTSA (2-7) 17-7 . Rice jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter and then held off FIU for its 5th straight win. This past Saturday, Rice got off to another 17-0 lead before allowing UTSA to score in the final quarter and gained their 6th straight win to hold onto second place in the western division of C-USA. Next weekend, Rice takes on Marshall for what could be a preview of the C-USA championship.

Kent State (1-8) lost to Toledo (6-3) 20-30. KSU spotted Toledo to a 16 point advantage at the half and then outscored them 20-14 in the second half after Nathan Strock replaced Colin Reardon at quarterback. Reardon was 10 of 23 with an INT in the game.

Air Force (7-2) ran over UNLV (2-8) 48-21. The Falcons out gained UNLV 542-339 with 386 of their yards coming on the ground. The Rebels had similar problems dealing with the New Mexico ground attack the previous week.

Western Kentucky (4-5) was destroyed by Louisiana Tech (6-3) 10-59 on Nov 1, and then scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to notch a 35-27 win over UTEP (5-4) this past Saturday. La Tech held Brandon Doughty to 14 of 35 and 134 yards, but Doughty bounced back to go 23 of 34 for 324 yards against UTEP. Keeping Doughty in check seems to be the key to winning against WKU, but few teams have been able to do that.

Fordham (7-1) came from behind to tie Bucknell (7-2) in regulation and then held Bucknell to a FG while scoring a TD to win the game 30-27. Bucknell is the only team with a winning record that Fordham has beaten this season. They were crushed by Villanova earlier in the year and have beaten below average FCS teams since. The Bucknell game was a better indicator of the kind of game we're likely to see in Michie.

Navy (4-5) had a bye week this week after putting a scare in Notre Dame last week, before losing 39-49. Navy (4-5) scored five touchdowns and finished with 454 yards, including 336 on the ground but Everett Golson became the first player in Notre Dame history to throw for three touchdowns and run for three scores to win the game. You'd think that ND would be better prepared to play the triple option after playing Navy every year, but apparently they haven't figured out to defend against it yet.

A couple of observations:

As the season progresses, some teams that may have looked good at the start of the season turn out to be less formidable and vice versa. Looking at the entire season, Western Kentucky looks more vulnerable providing you stop Doughty. Rice looks a lot stronger now that they've won 6 in a row. Fordham looks more beatable after watching the Bucknell game where they were facing a more competitive opponent. Yale has turned out to be one of the best in the Ivy League and more than a match for several of their Patriot League opponents. A game between Fordham and Yale would be interesting this year.

Sunday Questions

In lieu of today's showing or lack of against AFA, here are some questions I have:

1. How the HELL did we win two games - Buffalo and Ball St have to feel really bad?
2. Is Army really a better job than Ga Southern?? GSU is now FBS in the Sun Belt.
3. Does Monken wish he had stayed at GSU?
4. How long will it take Monken to get anywhere close to .500? Don't see the studs waiting in the wings - so next year for sure is another year like the last15.
5. Since 1996 is there a worse FBS program?? I am sure there is, just can't name them.
6. Should Monken play younger players the rest of the season?- including someone other than Angel or AJ at QB. Huge difference at QB between Army and the other SA.
7. Is there a more boring team to watch?? I have seen all 8 games so far and not much to get excited about.

Sorry but some frustration - I know we are not going to compete with the FBS guys every week or even every year, but it is getting hard to hang on and pay for season tickets and A Club every year. If I want to have a picnic and look at leaves, I can find another place.

I just watched Navy give ND all they wanted and actually lead in the 4Q. AFA dominated us - not as close as the score indicated. We are just not going to win with two Plebes in the OL. Maybe Monken wants to show how bad it is, so he gets lots of credit if he can turn it around. I would be surprised if we win again this year - Fordham is a good FCS team - better than Yale. I am sure there will be a big crowd at Yankee Stadium to see us play UCONN.

Phony "Scandal"

The WP Football recruiting trip to the Pallisades Mall is truly a manufactured "scandal".

The reality in ALL college sports is that interested student-athletes visit a university/college and get hosted
by current players. The current student-athletes share their experiences and insight on what life is like at their institution.

This part of the "recruiting experience" is a make or break component with many high school student athletes. They ask themselves- "Do I fit in here, academically, athleticall and socially . Do I like the players on the team. Is this a place I can see myself attending?" The difference between what goes on a "regular" schools and what happened at WP is that a bus was provided to get these guys to an off post location. A "regular" school weekend is much more informal and the athletic staff doesn't ask questions.

I experienced this 35 years ago and prospective student athletes continue to expereince it today.

At most schools the proseptive student athlete gets turned loose on a weekend night with someone on the team.
At most schools there are fraternities and sorities and various parties. Only naive and foolish adults think that most
college age young adults don't drink beer or periodically consume some kind of alchohol in social settings. These are young people- full of energy and life. In the case of WP the regimented environment is an unusual college experience. Very limited social settings on post/campus and downtown Highland Falls isn't too exciting.

If anyone thinks it's shocking that young folks drank beer at a bowling alley and enjoyed themselves I don't know what world you live in. If you think just because you attend a military academy
a young person must live a monastic life and isn't interested in the opposite sex you are a fool.

I am glad a professional form of transportation with a professional bus driver was used to safely move these young people from point A to point B.

Some underage high school kids drank some beer provided by legal age guys on the team. Ok- don't do it again. Get real.
Some female students went on the trip also. How horrible, how insulting, how crazy, how irresponsible. Get real.

Moving forward have recruits overnight at Kimsey and watch movies like "The Sound of Music" and playing "Scrabble" while being supervised by envious football hater Dwight Mears-

Duty- Honor-Country- These guys like all military personnel will live it- these guys like their classmates pay a heavy price for their service and sacrifice.

Ask the maimed and injured former football players, athletes and all grads as well as all military personnel about Duty-Honor-Country. Take a walk in the West Point cemetery and notice the section where recent young grads are at their final resting place.

A beer drinking scandal- get real.

Go Army-

Seniors/Juniors

I salute you for the time you put in this program. Seniors to have your last year go out like this, without little to no participation in this season is a travesty... As you stood and watched your (teamates) struggle and lose in this matter, is heart felt. And as this season continue, and you continue to show your support all the way to the end. Stay strong and continue to be ready when your number is called..
Go Army
