Army Black Knights Crush Marist in Christl Arena

The Black Knights bounced back from a pair of tough road losses to dismantle the Marist Red Foxes in front of a cheering home crowd. Army's depth is starting to pay dividends, overcoming injuries to a couple of starters and a key reserve with more "plug and play" assets inserted into the starting lineup. Much better shooting night for the Black Knights and the rebounding was phenomenal. This was a much needed win to get the young team back on track. Next up is another road trip on Saturday, this time to Penn State.

Go Army!!!

Bob Costas & NBC

Bob Costas' most recent foray into social/ political commentary during halftime of the Eagles/ Cowboys game was enough to make me turn the game off - almost for good.

This moron believes that if it weren't for guns, the KC Chief that murdered his girlfriend (and mother of his child) then committed suicide, would still be alive. That guns are responsible for "exacerbating our flaws" and leading people to kill each other. Never once did he mention mental illness or even suggest that the guy pulling the trigger had something do with it, let alone suggest that murderer deserves anything but sympathy and a quest for understanding.

Is it at all relevant to these people that the cities with the most restrictive gun control laws are the most violent (Chicago, LA, D.C., Detroit, etc) and that areas with the most permissive gun laws are the opposite?

Strict gun laws only disarm law abiding citizens.

People killed each other well before guns were invented.

Oh... and there's the fact about the 2nd amendment... of course the Constitution is just an outdated relic from a more "simple" time, so we don't need to pay attention to that.

The worst part of people like him isn't their ignorance or the fact that they have the means and platform to spread their ignorance, it's their condescending, self-proclaimed moral superiority that irks me the most. I guarantee that if Costas was dining out one night and some mad man came in to murder random people, he would be happy if someone was carrying a concealed weapon and stopped the slaughter before it got to him.

Gotta love the ivory tower.

Army Black Knights Drop Road Game to Bryant

Army faced a veteran Bryant team in a difficult road loss. Shooting percentage was down and Bryant took full advantage with several players in double figures. "We got outplayed by a more veteran team," Army head coach Zach Spiker said. "Dobbs, Starks and Francis really took it to us today. It's a teachable moment for our younger players."

As the young guys gain sometimes painful experience, Army is preparing for conference play. Go Army!!!

ARMY ENDS ROAD STRETCH WITH 70-59 LOSS AT BRYANT

Black Knights Score Season Low Point Total

SMITHFIELD, R.I. ? Army shot just 39 percent overall and was 6-for-26 (.231) from three-point range in its 70-59 loss to Bryant in men's basketball action at the Chace Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. The Black Knights, playing their third straight road game, dropped to 3-3 on the season, while Bryant claimed its fourth straight win to improve to 4-2.

Army senior Ella Ellis scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Black Knights in both categories. Ellis was Army's only double-digit scorer as the Black Knights posted a season-low scoring total. Ellis also dished out a team-high three assists.

Bryant had four players in double figures led by Dyami Starks's 20 points. Frankie Dobbs added 19, while Alex Francis and Joe O'Shea tallied 17 and 12, respectively. The Bulldogs shot 44.6 percent for the game, outscoring Army in the paint, 38-24. Dobbs, Francis and O'Shea each had six rebounds, and Corey Maynard handed out a game-high five assists.

The Black Knights outrebounded Bryant, 40-35, but turned it over 16 times. The Bulldogs also outscored Army 12-0 in fastbreak points.

Army struggled at the start, hitting just three of its first 15 shots, including seven straight misses from three-point range. The Black Knights scored first on a bucket by Springer, but Bryant came back with five straight to take the lead they would not give up for the remainder of the contest.

After an Army basket cut the deficit to 5-4, the Bulldogs went on a 14-3 run capped by a three-point play by Francis to claim a 19-7 lead with 9:40 to go. The Black Knights went five minutes, 43 seconds without a field goal during the spurt. Ellis's first three-pointer of the game snapped Army's 0-for-7 start from deep, but back-to-back triples by Starks and Dobbs pushed the Bulldogs' lead to 15, their largest of the half, at 27-12 with 7:27 left on the first-half clock.

The teams traded three-pointers before the Black Knights scored seven straight on a three-pointer by Toth and baskets by Stire and Gramling to cut the margin back to single digits at 30-22 with 2:33 left. Francis scored the final basket of the half with 1:41 left to make it a 32-22 game. The Bulldogs had two chances to score in the closing moments, but came up empty on two shot attempts.

Springer led Army with four points in the first half. Starks and Francis each had nine to pace the Bulldogs. The Black Knights shot just 28 percent (8-29) in the first half, including a 3-for-15 mark from three-point range. Bryant started the half 12-for-20 overall and 5-for-11 from deep, but made just one of its last eight shots, including five missed triples.

Ellis started the second half with a three-pointer to make it a seven-point game, but that was as close as Army would come. Five straight by the Bulldogs sparked a 14-5 run that put the Bulldogs on top by 16 at 46-30 with 15:29 to go. Starks scored seven points during the run.

The Black Knights fought back with eight of the next 10 points to make it a 48-38 deficit, but the Bulldogs answered again with the next five points to reclaim a 15-point advantage with 7:26 on the clock. Army had one more run, trimming the lead to single digits at 53-44, but the Bulldogs stopped the run and reclaimed a double-digit lead they would keep the remainder of the game.

The Black Knights play their first home game since Nov. 16 when they host Hudson Valley rival Marist at Christl Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 4. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.

Game Notes: Bryant, which was coming off a win over Boston College, snapped Army's five-game winning streak in the series … Ella Ellis took sole possession of sixth place on the Army career three-point ledger (135) … Kyle Wilson hit a three-pointer at the buzzer … it was his third straight game with a basket with less than three seconds to go in either half … Army dropped to 13-89 since the start of the 2004-05 season when shooting less than 40 percent … the Black Knights are now 13-50 in its last 63 games scoring less than 60 points … Army enters Tuesday's game at Marist with a five-game home winning streak versus non-conference opponents.

What's going with Lenox?

He was on the All-Rookie team last year but is rarely playing now.

Max was a helluva point guard for his high school, starting as a freshman and sophomore, before losing his junior year to a knee injury. He was their leading scorer and won Northern Region Player of the Year his senior year, along with being voted 1st Team All-State in Virginia. Coach Arritt of Fork Union Military Academy thought Lenox to be the best all-around player he ever coached.

Did something happen, if anyone knows? We try to follow him down here in Fairfax, VA.

Thank you.

Army Black Knights Take Down St. Francis (NY) On The Road

The Black Knights continue to develop as a team with key contributions from the veterans and the plebes, getting a good win on the road against an athletic and talented St. Francis (NY) squad. As the team jells and defines player roles, expect to see good things this season. Defensive pressure by the Black Knights kept SF's two best scorers under wraps, with 0 and 4 points, respectively.

The Army hoopsters take the Thanksgiving Holiday off and return to the hardwood in another road game against Yale on Saturday.

Happy Thanksgiving to all these fine cadets and their families. Go Army! HOOAH!!!

Army Black Knights Beat Binghamton in Home Opener

The Black Knights beat a pesky Binghamton squad in Army's home opener Friday afternoon. Huge game for plebe Kyle Wilson as he went 9-11 from the field, scoring a team and career high 25 points. Ella Ellis honored pregame for his 1,000th career point scored late last season.

Next up is St. Francis (NY) on Tuesday night as Army looks to keep its win streak going. Go Army!!!

Black Knights Men's Scrimmage with Cornell

The Black Knights held their 2nd preseason scrimmage Sat. afternoon against Cornell, where Coach Spiker coached prior to coming to West Point. Building on their earlier "win" over Fairleigh Dickinson, the Black Knights "won" again, this time over a team that is clearly a step up from FDU.

Scrimmage was not open to the public and no details available except they outplayed Cornell. Next up for Army is the season kickoff against Air Force

at the All Military Classic next weekend in Charleston, SC. Best of luck to the Black Knights this year!

Black Knights Men's Intersquad Scrimmage 10/24/12

Interesting stuff from Men's Hoops...the Black Knights held their 2nd intersquad scrimmage Wednesday evening. Tweets from Coach Spiker and others indicate the team looks pretty good at this early stage. Defensively, there looks to be significant improvement with a lot of new players that buy into tough, defensive play. Ball movement looks very good, as well, and there are a lot more guys that can light it up from the perimeter this year.

Interesting finish to this scrimmage...the Plebes took on the rest of the team in a final scrimmage of the evening. Remember, last year's USMAPS team totally eclipsed all previous USMAPS teams in terms of wins and domination of other teams. Well, tonight, the Plebes (8 from USMAPS and 3 direct admits) put a thumping on the returning players, 34-20. Tweets from the scrimmage indicated they jumped out to a 7-2 lead against last year's starters (Ellis, Springer, Lenox, Williams, Herbeck) and never looked back. Great signs of good things to come from Spiker's first true recruiting class, which will add tremendous depth to the team and may even find a few in some of the starting positions as the season plays out. Will be interesting to see how this team performs!

Black Knights 2012-2013 Men's Basketball Schedule

Coach Spiker has the new schedule posted. Of note are 2 games scheduled between Christmas and New Years down in Texas against Texas A&M and perennial NAIA (now NCAA Div. I) powerhouse Houston Baptist. Obviously, Spiker is adding a few more "quality" non-conference opponents before Patriot League action starts. I think that is a good thing.

Roster has only been partially updated, showing only that 3 seniors from last year are no longer on the list. A couple of guys still listed are no longer with the program and as yet, none of the 12 freshmen are listed. Gonna be a full house when the roster is complete.

If anything, Spiker will have more depth than he can get on the court during the course of a game, but there should not be anybody suffering from fatigue. Strategy may be to just run every team out of the gym with wave after wave of fresh legs! :)
