Ready for League Play

Army finshes their Pre-Patriot League play with their first home game after 7 road events by beating Dartmouth 67-47. This avenges a loss at Dartmouth last month 71-68. The team has shown a clear ability to score from the perimeter through 15 games . They enter league play against Colgate on Saturday with an 8-7 record. The Red Raiders are among a handful of teams nationally yet to win a game at 0-12. In other words, Saturday is a must win, even as a road game.

Army looks to be competitive for a 3-4 seed this season in Patriot League play. Team weaknesses of concern are high turnover ratio, over aggressiveness defensively which has lead to Army shooting approximately half as many free throws and their competition and finally, dangerously low free throw shooting percentage.

Team strengths year to date include much improved overall field goal shooting with depth in number of players showing consisitent ability to score from beyond the 3 point line. Team is young with only 2 seniors seeing significant time going into league play , led by #2 scorer Jeremy Hence who is having a breakout season averaging ~15 points and 6 rebounds/ game. Since fighting his way back into the starting line-up Sr. point guard Mitch McDonald has done a nice job with the ball averaging a better than 2-1 assist to turnover ratio. The sometimes very hot and sometimes cold Julian Simmons, Jr. agains leads the team in scoring at approx. 17 PPG.

Despite their size, rebounding is somewhat improved and overall ball movement has led to more assists. This is a very different Army team than past years. THis year's squad is not shy about shooting and playing a more up tempo game on both ends of the floor. Look for a 6-8 or 7-7 regular season. 7-7 would become Army's best record in league play since joining the Patriot League. Bucknell appears to be the class of the league entering play with American, Lehigh and Army appearing to be primary in pursuit. Navy has been slow out of the gate and ultimately appears to be a second division seed in the usually tight Patriot League.

To All: Please Read

We continue to see an increase in our subscribers on GoBlackKnights.com, which is very exciting.

With that we have received emails from time to time from many subs -- some of whom do not post, but actually enjoy reading the articles (content) & comments between posters.

Ironically, when we ask them why they don't post on the message board(s), the common response is they are new to this football community and are feeling their way around.

Yes, we truly understand that, but allow me to respond as I did to a couple of subscribers earlier.

We embrace and welcome the "new members" to the forum. Actually, it's that level of transfusion that makes the message board chats, conversations and debates that much more fun and exciting.

There are never any right or wrong comments per say, but more so this is just about the fans, parents, grads, former players, etc., that care about & embrace Army football and it's success ... that is what makes the GoBlackKnights.com site what it is and has become.

Our attempt is to provide a venue and forum that has updated information on the program and recruiting, and a place where fans like yourselves can discuss the good and bad relative to Army football.

That being said, please make yourself at home and we look forward to your interaction & posts on the various message boards and topics.

In addition, if there is anything you feel that we could do better, please let us know. We welcome your thoughts and feedback.

2nd year coach ....by Paul Franklin

Happy to see a post about basketball! (I love football, but basketball has always been my first love.) Thank you for the post. It’ll be exciting to see a young team stepping onto the ARMY basketball court.

I admit I’m a bit partial to the USMAPS players. They’re dedicated and focused about not just basketball, but serving our country as well. I'm sure that goes for all the players. I loved watching them play last year and look forward to seeing them perform again this season. I’m confident, they’ll get pass the “inexperience” and their communication, dedication and hard work will eventually pay off. I consider these men.....”my son’s.” I’m confident in Coach Spiker and believe he’s more than qualified to pull this team together. Be it this year or next, it will happen. I believe ARMY Basketball is in for a very exciting ride. I can’t wait until their opening game.

By the way, I could have sworn Alex Godette was taller than 5-11..... guess he just “played bigger”!

Go ARMY!!!

Army Baseball Looks Impressive; Big Army crowd at UNCG game

The Army team was impressive on Saturday. Ben K. had a no hitter until the 7th, and Joey Henshaw belted a 450 foot bomb that nearly hit the parking debt way beyond the RF fence.

Darnell made a nice web gem in CF and the team is very well coached. Army is a solid team and much better product than any other college team in our area, except for UNC Tarheels perhaps. Think Army could beat the Tarheels too.

Nice crowd from the local WP Society of Piedmont NC and the Parents club, etc. The announced crowd of 321 was by far made up of Army supporters. Nice support for the team.

We have a team that should make some noise in the College world series, IF they improve on defense. Lots of errors from unlikely plays and players last three days.

ARMY- navy B-ball -'bout time

The final 69-50 score is almost not an indication of how close the was - Army dominated by an even wider margin as they held the Patriot League's leading scorer - Chris Harris to 4 points. Previous low this year was 11 and he averages 21.4. This was the team I have expected to see throughout the Patriot League schedule. Two more home game should provide a 5-6-7 seed in the tourney. Just want this squard to end with a winning record. ah - what should have been. Feels great to destroy Navy in something !!!!!
