GBK: Pre-Camp Chalk Talk

Before we roll out our coverage from Saturday’s upcoming Army 1-day football camp, here are a few tidbits to wet your recruiting appetite.

QB prospect Donald Hammond won’t be on campus at Saturday’s 1-day football camp. But the Rivals 2-star prospect out of Georgia took an unofficial visit to the academy on Wednesday. He spent time meeting with QB coach, Mitch Ware, and later toured the campus and the football facilities.

Speaking of unofficial visits .... Ashton Barnes was also on campus and by all accounts had a great time. Like Hammond, he will not be at Saturday’s camp.

One of the 170 scheduled/registered participates will be QB Felix Harper, who is a heavy Army lean and text us early to confirm that he is already at West Point.

Stay tuned for our recruiting update on 2017 prospect and Rivals 3-star RB Travis Levy.

Another new name to keep an eye on is Michael Davenport, who was offered on Thursday by CB coach Orlando Mitjans. We will more on what is unfolding with the Woodberry (Va.) safety’s recruiting in a separate and upcoming GBK article.

Like Davenport, Alonzo McCoy was spotted at the University of Maryland camp and was offered on the spot by Mitjans as well. The 5’11” 177 pound CB committed to Toledo back in March, but his recruiting remains open and we will have more on McCoy’s status .... so keep it right here.

Jace Webb looks like a winner

According to the description Webb would be a perfect fit for Army at guard or tackle.. At6/4and297 he certainly would fit Monkens desire to bulk up on the line. He says his priority is getting a great education .Idont see any schools on his offer list that can compete with Army on that score.. He wants to go where they win some games.Army is working hard on building a winning team but it shows how winning can beget winning. 2015 is a very Iimportant year to start building momentum

Notre Dame's Brian Kelly on Athletes at Academic Risk

No doubt many of you saw his comment that "all of them are" at academi risk. That maybe 3-4 members of the travel team would get into ND without football. Which is probably the inverse of: all cadets can get into ND and only 3-4 could make the travel team. Of all the challenges, this, thematically, is the biggest. Even ND allows anyone in. What about Eastern Michigan? When Bobby Petrino was at WKU - do you not think he could get an ax murderer in? How can we compete when we get zero 2.2 GPA slide ins? It feels like our recrutiing is 5% better than our previous efforts, but overall mean of FBS is 8% better based on the fact that everyone gets in somewhere. Surely someone will bring up that Navy and AF manage, but as for us, the past 20 years of data make it hard to say we're gaining on it.

GBK 2015 Breakout Players: DL, Andrew McLean

Each year about this time, GBK identifies the players that we expect to have breakout seasons or even more so, need to have breakout campaigns in order for Army to have a successful season.

Offensive Line

This is an interesting statistic on returning offensive line starts for all 128 FBS teams:

http://www.philsteele.com/Blogs/2015/JUNE15/DBJune04.html

We are tied with two of our 2015 opponents: Penn State and Rutgers.
We lead three opponents: UConn, Air Force, and Navy

Duke and E Michigan have a few extra total starts. Wake Forest and Rice are a bit further ahead.

Tulane has the most experienced line we will face although by then injuries make these pre-season statistics less valuable for comparison now.

The UConn game might be one where this advantage helps with predictions. And I recall that they did not run well on us last November too.
