The Inside Stuff Official Army-Temple Game (9/26) Prediction Thread

There is a GBK article (GBK: Predicting Army Black Knights' 2024 Campaign) whereby Joe Iacono has given his prediction of the upcoming season, which kicked off on Friday (8/30).

This past weekend, the Black Knights took on the visiting Rice Owls and came away victorious with a solid performance, especially in the 1st half of the game.

But this upcoming week, which is a short week for the Black Knights, they hit the road once again to take on another OWL … this time it the Owls of Temple University in just 4 days.

As noted, this is a short week and we move away from our normal Monday Prediction Thread and kick it off starting today.

Dolphins legend Mercury Morris dies at 77

#22 was key member of famous undefeated 1972 Miami team

Mercury-Morris-1.jpg

Miami Dolphins legend Mercury Morris has died at the age of 77, the team confirmed Sunday morning. A former third-round pick out of West Texas State, Morris was an electric running back as well as returner, who played a major role in helping the Dolphins reach the top of the NFL world.

The Dolphins released a statement on the passing of one of the franchise's all-time greats.

Morris won two Super Bowls with the Dolphins, and was a member of the famous undefeated 1972 team, which he led with 12 rushing touchdowns. It was in that 1972 season Morris and Larry Csonka made NFL history by becoming the first teammates to rush for 1,000 yards in the same year. Morris made three Pro Bowls in his eight NFL seasons, and decided to retire following the 1976 season, which he spent with the Chargers, due to lingering injuries.

Morris' family released a statement announcing the news:

"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eugene 'Mercury' Morris, legendary Miami Dolphins running back and cherished member of the NFL family, at the age of 77. Known for his electrifying speed and dynamic play, Mercury was a cornerstone of the Dolphins' historic 1972 undefeated season and a two-time Super Bowl champion. His talent and passion left an indelible mark on the sport, and his three Pro Bowl selections only solidified his place among football's greats.
Beyond the field, Mercury was a devoted father, a loving brother, a loyal friend, and a pillar in the community. His presence extended far beyond football, as he touched the lives of many throughout his time in Miami.
Survived by his children Geno, Maceo, Tiffany, Troy, and Elliott, and his siblings Cynthia, Valerie, and Janice, Mercury's legacy is carried on by those who knew and loved him most.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those who had the honor of knowing him. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations, both in the game of football and in life.
The family kindly requests privacy during this difficult time."
Morris burst onto the NFL scene as a rookie, leading the league in kick return yards with 1,136 on 43 returns. That includes a 105-yard return touchdown he registered in his first-ever game. While Morris rushed for just 110 yards in his rookie season, he would eventually be given more chances on offense. Having him plus Csonka in the backfield made the Dolphins quite literally unbeatable.

"I think the strength of our team in the '70s," Csonka told CBS Sports earlier this year, "was the fact that we controlled the game by controlling the clock by getting first downs and making that third and short yardage, which was consistently almost perfect during that perfect season."

Morris will be remembered for his electric playing style and electric personality. His 3,877 rushing yards rank fourth all-time in Dolphins franchise history, his 29 rushing touchdowns rank fifth and his 2,947 kick return yards, third. Morris is still the only Dolphin to return more than two kicks for touchdowns.

AP Top 25 Poll

I have two basic questions.

1. Should we have received any votes at all based on our record or does the Lehigh game in the minds of voters don't really provide a true assessment of how good we are or not?

2. How can Northern Illinois beat Notre Dame, but the Fighting Irish be ranked ahead of them and others for that matter?

Texas made a big move in the AP Top 25 this week after a huge road win against Michigan. The Longhorns leapfrogged Ohio State, the Wolverines' biggest, rival, for the No. 2 spot behind still top-ranked Georgia.

The Buckeyes still received more first-place votes with five to the Longhorns' four. Those two, and Georgia, were the only three schools to get any consideration for the top spot.

Elsewhere, Ole Miss was a big winner in the fallout from Notre Dame's 16-14 loss to Northern Illinois, as the Rebels leapt to No. 5 in the latest AP Top 25 ahead of Week 3's slate of games. It's the first time since Week 3 of the 2015 season that Ole Miss, which also ranked No. 5 in the latest Coaches Poll, has landed in the top five of the AP poll.

Tennessee also benefited from Notre Dame's stumble -- and Michigan's big loss at home to Texas -- to break into the top 10 at No. 7. The Vols climbed seven spots from No. 14 after a 51-10 win against NC State. The SEC dominated the top of the latest rankings, grabbing six of the first seven spots, which is a first in the 88-year-old poll's history.

Kansas, NC State, Georgia Tech and Iowa all dropped out of the top 25 after major nonconference losses, which opened the door for a slew of newcomers to make their 2024 AP poll debut. Iowa State made a huge leap to No. 21 after downing the Hawkeyes, while Nebraska, Boston College and Northern Illinois all rocketed into the poll to round out Nos. 23-25.

Here's a look at the full AP Top 25 poll now that the dust has settled from an eventful Week 2.

Official Army-FAU Game (9/7) Prediction Thread

There is a GBK article (GBK: Predicting Army Black Knights' 2024 Campaign) whereby Joe Iacono has given his prediction of the upcoming season, which kicked off on Friday (8/30).

Last Friday, the Black Knights were at home at Michie Stadium against Lehigh and came away with a solid win. Now they hit the road to take on a tough Florida Atlantic team, which will be their first true test of the season.

Official Army-Rice Game (9/21) Prediction Thread

There is a GBK article (GBK: Predicting Army Black Knights' 2024 Campaign) whereby Joe Iacono has given his prediction of the upcoming season, which kicked off on Friday (8/30).

This past weekend, the Black Knights had a bye week, but it only building up to the expected home game at Michie Stadium to take on visiting Rice. The Army squad is coming into the game with a 2-0 record, leading the nation in rushing, and are favorites in this game.

Favorite is good to hear, but as someone once said ... "THAT IS WHY YOU PLAY THE GAME".

With being said, chime in with your prediction for Saturday's upcoming contest.

Obama To Receive 2024 Sylvanus Thayer Award

Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States, will receive the 2024 Sylvanus Thayer Award from the West Point Association of Graduates. Obama will be the fifth U.S. president to receive the Thayer Award during its 67-year history. The award will be presented on September 19, 2024, during ceremonies hosted by the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

WPAOG’s Board Chairman, the Honorable Robert A. McDonald said, “As a two-term president of the United States, Barack Obama’s administration understood what President Lincoln meant in his Second Inaugural Address when he directed the nation to care for those who have ‘borne the battle.’” Obama left office on January 20, 2017, as the first American president to oversee two full terms as a commander-in-chief with combat troops deployed to hostile zones during a time of war. During his time in public service, he fought to make sure that veterans have timely and high-quality access to care, to modernize the claims process, to prevent and end veteran homelessness, and to provide resources so that the nation is serving every veteran. “His life and career have inspired countless Americans, including many cadets past and present,” said McDonald. “Having President Obama forever associated with West Point through its most prestigious award speaks directly to the Thayer Award’s purpose of recognizing a citizen of the United States, other than a West Point graduate, whose outstanding character, accomplishments, and stature draw wholesome comparison to the qualities for which West Point strives, in keeping with its motto: ‘Duty, Honor, Country.’”

“I want to thank the West Point Association of Graduates for this distinguished award,” said President Obama. “I’ve been a longtime supporter of West Point’s mission and have always admired the leaders of character it has produced for our nation.”

“The Thayer Award recipient is selected by the Thayer Award Committee, a 15-member nominating committee that includes representatives from numerous West Point classes spanning several decades and regions, as well as Army representatives. The committee reviews and debates the merits of approximately 25 nominations submitted by West Point Graduates. The WPAOG Board of Directors ratifies the committee’s selection,” stated retired Lieutenant General Guy Swan III and committee Chair.

Obama graduated from Columbia University in 1983 with a B.A. in political science, and in 1988, he enrolled in Harvard Law School Upon graduation, he returned to Illinois to teach constitutional law at the University of Chicago and begin a career in public service, winning seats in the Illinois State Senate and the United States Senate. As a U.S. senator, he served on the United States Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs and Committee on Foreign Relations. Obama’s belief in America’s indispensable leadership and strong, principled diplomacy helped him wind down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, decimate al Qaeda and eliminate Osama bin Laden and the world’s most wanted terrorists, and shut down Iran’s nuclear weapons program. Obama’s military support and accomplishments include increasing Special Forces teams and technology during the Iraq War, which proved to be a positive forward-thinking strategy for the United States, and introducing strategies and policies that reduced the number of American casualties in the Global War on Terrorism. In 2014, Obama signed the Veterans’ Access to Care through Choice, Accountability, and Transparency Act (aka “VA reform bill”), making more funding available to enable better medical care for veterans. He also initiated and signed a recruitment and employment plan to get more veterans into government jobs (lowering the unemployment rate for veterans by more than half) and signed a bill to expand the availability of housing to homeless veterans.
