GoArmySports announced today that former Army hockey coach Jack Riley passed away this afternoon. He's probably best remembered for being the coach of the 1960 US Olympic hockey team that performed what's commonly called the Miracle on Ice in winning the gold medal in an era when the Soviet Union team dominated. He's also the winningest hockey coach in Army history and 18th on the all time list of hockey coaches in the US.
I grew up playing pond hockey in Michigan, and always enjoyed watching the sport. I watched some good games up in the old Tate rink when Jack was coaching. It was not nearly as nice as the current facility, but the teams were more exciting. Jack is the father of the current Army coach, Brian Riley.
RIP
