The Marketing of AWP Football - who is the fan base

The power of a football program and its support is generated in a number of ways. Mostly around how large is the fan base, which translates to economic power. A wise NCAA marketer told me, what makes Arizona or Arizona state powerful is graduating 40,000 alumni a year, who over 10 years is 400k. You dont need many of them to attend games, join the booster club and donate. 40,000 students, all charged a "student acitivity fee" as part oft tuition to subsidize or pay for student tickets, creates a lot of money. We dont have that. But Bowl committees know that we can mobilize 10k fans for a bowl game, while Temple or Mid Tenn State would mobilize 2500. So it would be interesting to discuss, who is the Army fan base and what allows us to punch above our weight (even though I think our marketing has been lacking in many ways). If we did a pie chart of the fan base (those who identify themselves as AWP fans, donate and attend a few games), using these 4 categories, what would the break down be. 1. Alumni and family. 2. US Army personnel (I know that not all enlisted folks love USMA grads but I have met many at games). 3. Fans within a 50 mile radius of WP who enjoy the game day experience and frankly have few FBS alternatives. 4. US Citizens located anywhere, who root for AWP because they are good kids and are playing a "pure" form of NCAA Football.
In full disclosure, I am just a kid, whose dad was ROTC and a 1LT in Vietnam, and got out right as he made Capt. I couldnt qualify to attend WP in the traditional sense, but had a brief flirtation with Navy baseball and was a PWO for an FBS program in FL. I was born on Ft Lewis in Tacoma, and grew up in North Jersey, going to games and supporting the cause. When I lived in Europe, I participated in MWF sports programs on different bases and even was on a hockey team that representing England bases - won the US Armed Forces Europe championship in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Technically I should not have been on that team. And I like supporting the last true vestiges of real College Football. So I bleed into a few different categories. This disclosure is somewhat embarrassing and I dont want anyone to think that I feel I am fully vested or have more insight on most issues than an Old Grad. But to come back around, I would be interested to get your opinions on what that pie chart looks like.

The Inside Stuff Inside GBK: Army QB competition drawing closer

As we close the final chapter of the 2016 recruiting class with today’s commitment from Long Snapper Trent Brittingham out of River Bluff High School in Lexington S.C., we now begin to move our attention to the upcoming Spring practice..

Of course, all eyes will be upon the QB competition and that’s were we will start, as we had the opportunity to go one-on-one with Army offensive coordinator, Brent Davis.

So stay tuned for our upcoming Q&A, as he breaks down the the Black Knights’ QB competition heading into spring practice.

Wrong forum but...

Are there any other Army Hockey fans out there? The team is on a nice little roll right now, with a six game unbeaten streak. They are sneaking up in the conference standings, and have been really playing well. With the recent passing of Jack Riley, I am hoping, wishing and praying that the team can pay tribute to him by earning an NCAA tournament bid. Might be too much to hope for, but I love the way they are playing right now!

A contrarian view on the recruiting class

Just to provide another perspective, here we are again talking about how we knocked it out of the park recruiting. But the ultimate broadstroke barometer - the 3 star athlete - is the same as usual, the same as Harvard, 6 less than W. Michigan of the MAC who had 8/26 signees. (I'd like to think one day we will match MAC level recruiting). More discouraging yet, one of our 3 star guys is a WR. The last place we need one. I'm not saying our recruiting is not improving , but in this era where any FBS school can get any athlete in, including JUCOs, "playing time transfers" and those with criminal records, is our's improving / "gaining on" the bottom 20% of FBS who are all chasing the revenue pie? Who's recruiting is ascending more relative to the baseline, us or North Texas, UTEP or UTSA?
