Army Football Breaking News: Army Coaching Change

There is already at thread on this board, actually two I believe .... as it relates to coaching changes across the country with other programs and one is related to the changes coming into the 2020 season for the Army Black Knights.

Well, this post is to let you know that there is a change that is forthcoming for the Black Knights, but has yet to be officially announce, so we are going to hold off for the moment.

What I will tell you is that he's a solid coach, been around for awhile and is on the defensive side of the ball. He was kind of enough to text me to let me know before it's put out there. IMO, the program is going to miss him but I wish him well in his new and upcoming coaching role.

Women's Lacrosse | Black Knights best Monmouth: Improve to 5-0

BLACK KNIGHTS BEST MONMOUTH; IMPROVE TO 5-0

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team handed Monmouth its first loss of the season after topping the Hawks, 12-9, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Black Knights (5-0) got ahead early and never trailed in the game. It marks the second consecutive year that Army started a season with a 5-0 record.

Cameron Manor was at the front of the attack against the Hawks (3-1) as she tied her career-high scoring mark with four goals. The junior came off the bench and needed just five shots to tally her four scores.

Caroline Raymond also recorded a hat trick after putting in three goals. The Mahopac, N.Y., was heavily involved on both sides of the ball as she additionally dished out two helpers and caused a career-high three turnovers. Taylor Korpela pitched in defensively as well, causing two turnovers and tallying three ground balls.

In her first start of the season, Taylor Andrews was the third cadet to score multiple goals opposite the Hawks as she netted two. Megan Raftery, Samantha Stewart and Kathleen Sullivan chipped in with one goal apiece.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES

  • Manor recorded her second hat trick of the season and the third of her career.
  • Raymond extended her point streak to 23 games.
  • She tallied her second hat trick of the season and the ninth of her career.
  • Dating back to last season, Army has scored in double figures in 10 consecutive outings.
  • The Black Knights held their fifth straight opponent to single-digit goals.
  • Stewart tied her season-best mark for draw controls with six.
  • Maddie Burns notched double-digit saves for the first time this season with 14.
  • Army won 12 draws compared to Monmouth's 11.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Black Knights were red hot from the start and jumped out to an early 5-0 lead over the first five minutes of play. Raymond found Manor for a score less than a minute into action before the sophomore followed by netting two goals of her own. Andrews then got involved and found the back of the net twice to make it a 5-0 run for Army.
  • After nearly 10 minutes went by without a goal being scored from either side, Monmouth went on a 5-0 run to even the score with 5:37 left in the half. Raymond ended the Black Knights' scoring drought after she found the back of the net with 4:43 on the clock before Manor and Sullivan added to the lead with one goal apiece to give Army an 8-5 advantage heading into the break.
  • The Hawks pulled within two, 9-7, with 18:50 remaining, but Army responded with three unanswered goals to go ahead by five, 12-7. Monmouth had two late scores in the closing 13 minutes, but the deficit proved to be too large as Army came away with the 12-9 road win.

OT: Army Wrestling takes 4 in a row and 5/last 6 from Navy

I streamed the match on Stadium. Worst announcers ever. Think Donovan McNabb doing Army football x 10. Army won 15-15 and won 29-26 on Criteria C (most match points scored). It was a super close match with most bouts decided in the waning seconds. We would have won outright 16-15 but the refs deducted a point from Coach Ward for unsportsmanlike conduct. It was some home cooking BS.
Noah Stewart saved the day at 184 with a major decision that tied the match and ended up being the difference in the tiebreaker.
It wasn’t our best outing and we looked really bad on our feet and on top. We have work to do before EIWAs in two weeks. Our best wrestler, #10 Markus Hartman (So) sat out at 157 but Sr. Luke Weiland got a 4-0 win.
#17 Ben Harvey lost a heartbreaker on the buzzer 3–1 to Spencer Carey. HWT #20 Ben Sullivan tied the match with a 1-0 win.

Army Football Fan Participation: Best Army Recruiting Class since Head Coach Jeff Monken took over?

Yes, there was a brief overlapping moment when the 2014 Army recruiting class was for the most part recruited by former head coach Rich Ellerson and his staff. However, that same group was developed and coached when Jeff Monken and his staff official took over the reins in 12/24/13.

So in hindsight, which recruiting class as the best in your eyes thus far? Obviously the further out it allows for fans to see the full body of work of the players/class and as such, the comparative will be for the 2014, 2015 & 2016 recruiting classes.

By the way, here are some of the headliners for each class.

The Inside Stuff Funk Receives Patriot League Player of the Week Nod

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Tommy Funk of the Army West Point men’s basketball team was named the Patriot League Player of the Week for the fourth time this season.

The Warrington, Pa., native becomes the first cadet since Jarell Brown ’08 to receive player of the week recognition from the league four times in the same year. Funk and fellow senior captain Matt Wilson have now combined for five player of the week honors this season, marking the most by an Army squad in a single season since the 2007-08 campaign.

Funk was stellar in a 1-1 week for the Black Knights, averaging 24.5 points, 8.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game while shooting 39 percent from the field and 36 percent from long range. The senior played a full 40 minutes in a Wednesday game against Loyola and the full 45 minutes in an overtime win versus Navy on Saturday, but he only turned the ball over twice while handing out 16 total assists (8.0 assist-to-turnover ratio).

In a midweek tilt opposite the Greyhounds, he shot 7-of-19 from the field and 3-of-10 from long range on his way to a 17-point outing. He dished out a game-high nine assists and recorded just one turnover to go along with three rebounds. In that contest Funk extended his double-digit scoring streak to 22 games, which was the longest single-season double-digit streak in program history since Army Hall of Famer Kevin Houston ’87 did it in 29 straight games as a senior.

Funk then led the Black Knights to a thrilling 86-75 overtime win versus rival Navy on Saturday. He recorded the second 30-point game of his career after tallying 32 in the scoring column. His efforts helped Army sweep Navy in the regular season for the first time since the 2011-12 campaign. Against the Mids, he went 10-of-25 from the field, 5-of-12 from deep and 7-of-10 from the foul line. He reeled in seven rebounds and handed out seven helpers while turning the ball over once in a full 45 minutes of play.

Eight of his 32 points came in the overtime period, where Army outscored Navy, 17-6. It marked the third time in his career that he had double-digit makes in a game. Funk moved into the top-10 in program history in career points and took sole possession of seventh in career steals at Army after recording one takeaway versus the Mids. He became the first cadet to post two 30-point performances in the same season since Kyle Wilson ’16 did it twice as a junior in 2014-15. Funk has now handed out five or more assists in 12 straight games.

Funk and the Black Knights return to action on Wednesday night when they host Holy Cross for a 7 p.m. Patriot League tilt.

Beretta named a Cosida Hall of Fame Inductee

WEST POINT, N.Y. –
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) has announced that Army West Point Senior Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Initiatives Bob Beretta has been named one of its six 2020 Hall of Fame inductees. Beretta will be honored at CoSIDA’s 63rd annual convention this June.

“Bob Beretta has been a valued member of Army West Point Athletics in a myriad of ways since joining the team over 30 years ago,” said Director of Athletics Mike Buddie. “He is a rare find in college athletics who has experience in so many areas, and has made a true commitment to the staff and cadets at West Point. I am thrilled that CoSIDA is recognizing Bob for his consistent excellence as a professional and a person.”

“I am tremendously honored and extremely humbled to be elected to the CoSIDA Hall of Fame,” said Beretta. “I would like to thank Bill Little and his committee for their incredible work and dedication to the communications field. They are legends within the industry, and I cannot express enough gratitude for being recognized with this honor.

“I’d also like to thank the phenomenal team we assembled at West Point over the years. This award is a reflection of the professionalism and work ethic those talented individuals displayed every day and is a culmination of their unyielding commitment to excellence. They are the true hall of famers. I was just fortunate enough to be in the SID chair for that period of time. West Point is a special place comprised of special people. I’ve been blessed to remain part of this community for my entire professional career

CoSIDA is comprised of more than 3,100 intercollegiate athletic communications and media relations professionals from colleges, universities and athletic conferences at all divisions of competition in the United States and Canada.

Beretta’s induction will take place during the 2020 CoSIDA Convention at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Conference Center in Las Vegas. The CoSIDA Convention takes place June 7-10 and is held in conjunction with National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and Affiliates Convention Week.

Each of the six inductees will join their predecessors on the CoSIDA Hall of Fame plaques that are on permanent display at the NCAA Hall of Champions in Indianapolis.

Beretta is in his 19th year serving as a member of the Army athletic department’s senior leadership team and 33rd year overall in West Point's athletic department. He is in his 13th year steering many of the athletic department's external operations ventures to include sport supervision, team and game operations, corporate sponsorship, Army-Navy operations and all Army football bowl activities. Previously, he oversaw Army’s athletic communications, multi-media, broadcasting, new media and publicity efforts for the Black Knights’ 28 intercollegiate athletic teams for more than 25 years.

He also oversees maintenance of athletic department's strategic plan, while holding positions on the Patriot League Sport Management Committee, the Army-Navy Steering Committee, among others. He recently completed a three-year stint on the NCAA Hockey Rules Committee and served for two years as the Chairman of Atlantic Hockey’s Executive Committee. He currently serves as the Patriot League SMC liaison with the conference’s baseball head coaches committee and serves as West Point's lead contact with the New York Yankees and New York Mets, managing all aspects of those vital relationships. During his time leading Atlantic Hockey's Executive Committee, he was instrumental in the league outsourcing its multi-media rights for the first time in conference history, leading to a significant increase in corporate sponsorship revenue.

Previously, he oversaw the athletic department's fund-raising, donor relations, ticket sales and revenue generation initiatives. He was personally charged with synchronizing the entire External Operations department in order to align resources, maximize efficiencies and produce one cohesive unit. He also provided oversight to the athletic department's equipment and facility operations for two years and served as the athletic department’s lead for all new construction projects for several years. During that time, he worked diligently through the construction of five new homes for head coaches and the Foley, Enners, Nathe lacrosse center, a $15 million state-of-the art home for Army’s men’s and women’s lacrosse programs that opened in the fall of 2016.

The Newburgh, N.Y., native has handled football scheduling initiatives for West Point's Division I Independent Football Bowl Subdivision team since 2005. He developed a strategic plan for scheduling that completely overhauled Army's previous philosophy for the current 12-year (2013-24) scheduling cycle to provide the Black Knights with their best possible chance for success. He serves as lead negotiator for all postseason bowl, television and neutral-site football contracts and has been the chairman of Army Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee since its inception in 2004. He has served as Army's lead contact and bowl trip coordinator for each of the Black Knights' last three bowl appearances, including the 2016 Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl and the 2017 Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl, and has been charged with all operational and financial responsibilities. He was instrumental in changing NCAA legislation this past winter to allow Army to gain direct access to the bowl system.

Beretta assumed duties as the U.S. Military Academy's sports information director in April 1995 after serving for eight years as an assistant under longtime Army SID Bob Kinney. Beretta was named an assistant athletic director in 2000, the first SID to hold such a rank at West Point.

He was promoted to Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Communications in August 2003. Two years later, Beretta added the title of Senior Associate Athletic Director and expanded that role to Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Operations, Relationships and Branding in May of 2008. He was named Senior Executive Associate Athletic Director in July 2010, then was elevated to Executive Athletic Director in February 2012.

Beretta graduated magna cum laude from St. Bonaventure University in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in mass communication and was a four-time letter-winner on the Bonnies' baseball team. The three-time team captain earned St. Bonaventure's Varsity Letterman of the Year Award as a senior and was named to the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Academic honorable mention squad on two occasions. Three weeks following graduation, he began a six-month internship in Army's sports information department.

Beretta is a past president of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Sports Information Directors of America (ECAC-SIDA) and served on the organization's executive board for more than two decades. He was presented with the ECAC-SIDA Irving T. Marsh Award in the spring of 2010 and the Pete Nevins Award for Distinguished Achievement in June 2014. As Charities Director, he and his committee raised more than $60,000 for the organization's charitable efforts over a 15-year period.

Beretta is also active in the local community, serving as founder and head coach of a highly competitive girls travel softball program for the past nine years. Seven of his players from the Monroe-Woodbury Crusaders program have gone on to play in college over the past three years. His Crusader teams have registered nearly a .700 winning percentage during his tenure at the helm.

Beretta and his wife, Jennifer, live in Monroe, N.Y., with their daughter, Julia, a member of the club softball team at Sacred Heart University.

OT: 2020 Lacrosse Season

Men and Women have started hot to open the season, particularly the men's team who are now ranked #7 in the Coaches Poll and #9 in the Media (Inside Lacrosse) Poll after blowing out two ranked teams.

Men
W, 17-4 vs. #18/#19 UMass
W, 19-1 vs. NJIT
W, 15-4 vs. #19/#20 Rutgers

It was 15-2 vs. Rutgers halfway through the 4th quarter before they subbed out everyone. UMass rebounded to beat #12 Ohio State this past weekend. The men have a match-up tomorrow (Tue., 18 Feb) with Marist on the road followed by a huge game this weekend (Sat., 23 Feb) with #5 Syracuse on the road (will be televised on ACCNX).

Women
W, 16-4 vs. Marist
W, 16-7 at Columbia

The women look like they're trying for a repeat of last year's opening 7-game win streak. It's certainly possible considering they play a weaker non-conference slate than fellow powerhouse conference members Loyola and Navy. Games at home against Iona on Wednesday (19 Feb) and on the road at Hartford on Friday (21 Feb).

Edit - Thanks for fixing the Thread Title!

Another OT: Hockey

Clinched first round bye for the AHA tournament.

The story at gawp.com says

"Seeding will be determined in the next two weeks. Army has three league games remaining in the regular season and all three will be played at Tate Rink."

But leaves out some important info: two of those games are against Sacred Heart (currently 3 points ahead of Army in the standings) and the other is against AIC (9 points ahead of Army).

Sacred Heart's other remaining game: AIC.

It's very feasible for Army to get the 2 seed.
