Class participation in Saturdays scrimmage

Using the gbk post on Saturdays scrimmage I counted the numbers on offense and defense by class
The numbers using both first and second teams
OFFENSE 7SR 4JR 2SO 9FR

DEFENSE 5SR 6JR 5SO 6 FR

The freshman appear to be split 9 from the prep school and 6 were direct admits. The direct admits
were 2 3stars Gibson and Brinson and 4 are 2 stars .. As the numbers show their are 15 freshman trying to make or maintain their positions on the first two teams. Right now freshman are 34% of the two deep roster. Its still early but youth is going to be an important part of this team.

Villanueva

Ali Villanuava has been getting some favorable comments on the Pittsburgh sites. As most of you know he was given a tryout by the Eagles last year as a defensive lineman. He was cut by the Eagles but picked up by Pittsburgh who put him on their practice squad as an offensive lineman. Apparently it has been a smart move as he is currently listed as their number 3 offensive tackle. It is interesting to note that he is still listed on their roster at 6'9" , 277 lbs. That I am sure was his weight when they signed him as he had been trying to make the Eagles as an DE. One of the positive articles that I recently read referred to him as a giant among giants. Said they believed him to be 6'9" ,340. All I have read spoke about him perfecting the techniques of playing offensive tackle. All felt that he had made tremendous progress and was continuing to work hard to get even better. They play the Vikings tonight in the hall of fame game. He will play a lot tonight. His number is 78. It would be worth checking it out.
As most of you know Ali recently left the Army as a Captain where he was in a ranger unit and had 3 deployments in Afghanistan. Impressive young man. Hard not to root hard for someone like him.

Army-Navy Basketball Game will be at Madison Square Garden

I just noticed that Army’s (or should I say Army West Point’s?) basketball schedule lists the home game against Navy as being played at Madison Square Garden, NYC, NY, Sat, Jan 23, Start time TBD.

It’s also listed as the star game. The Patriot League schedule hasn’t been announced yet, but the normal scheduling pattern for this year would have had Army hosting Navy in the 2nd of their two league games sometime in early February. It means that Boo convinced the Patriot League to move the Army-hosted game to a date when the Garden had an opening.

This will be an intriguing gambit. I presume that giving up home court for a neutral site was in anticipation of a higher attendance and ticket revenue than playing at West Point. The Army-Navy games are usually sell outs, or at least all the seats are filled. Whether this will translate to a decent crowd in NYC remains to be seen. Otherwise, attendance at Army Basketball games is relatively sparse.

Media Day

Watching the interviews of Jay Bateman and Brent Davis today on twitter (periscope), it was encouraging to hear them both say that they think their guys up front (on both sides of the ball) are better this year. Davis also said we have more speed on offense. The coaches said the freshman class has a lot of talent, many of whom will contribute this year. All good news. Bateman said Moss adds a lot of much needed speed to the secondary and that Timph and King will anchor the D in the middle. All good news. Go Army.....Beat Fordham!
