GBK Commitment Update: This 2021 Army Commit will not be making his way to West Point

"Hey, I’m not sure if you were aware of my situation, but I was medically disqualified due to food allergies at the last minute and was unable to attend West Point. Totally out of my control and I still root for Army to this day due to how grateful I am for being given the opportunity.," said Chris Joines to GBK Thursday evening.

Post bowl game observations

1. This was a solid win over a legit SEC team with a great coaching staff. Drinkwitz is an excellent coach and he had Missouri prepared for our team. But the Army coaches were better. I think Monken and Davis took the Navy loss personally and they really responded with this bowl opportunity. They had the right plays practiced and ready to win this game.

2. O line and fullbacks performed superbly. That was needed as the Mizzou defense was very fast to the boundary.

3. The long pass completion to Robinson was covered. Christian Anderson made a perfect pass and Robinson was too fast for the defense to catch up to him on the route. The inside defender especially reacted well but could not catch T Rob. An amazing play that led to the first TD.

4. All season long this Army team has shown poise, grit, and determination. No one has blown out this 2021 Army team. Even in the bad Ball State start the team fought back and made it a game.

5. Our defense overcame a slow start AND a very, very talented Missouri O line. Badie is a great runner but you do not get over 1600 yards in 12 games playing an SEC schedule with a mediocre O line. Credit to our D and especially our safeties who made tackles to stop breakaway runs.

Why The 12th Knight Premium Message Board?

Army getting some positive press on win over Missouri.

Army had some good coverage on ESPN on Gutsy victory over Missouri. I’m realizing this was a bigger when than I thought. Also saw on half time of UCF vs Florida a fair amount of positive talk. Monkin also was lauded for his success at Army. On my local sports station in Atlanta, the afternoon show had a spot on Army and also talked about Monkin and expressed surprise that he hasn’t been courted more.

Post game thoughts

I think @jiacono nailed the post game summary. Thanks Joe.

We will get an indicator of how stubborn Coach Monken and Coach Davis are in the upcoming bowl game versus Missouri. I expect them to stubbornly cling to playing Anderson and Tyler in the same drive. If they do that I hope it works well enough to win.

The bowl will also give us a measure of the resilience of this 2021 Army team. It is not easy for any team to take final exams and prep to play a bowl game in 10 days. I expect the team to pull together and make a strong effort in Dallas.

Coach Monken does not mention players by name while criticizing play right after a game. But this was not the first postgame where Monken has anonymously criticized Andre Carter’s poor tackling and play containment on sideline runs. He knows this is a problem.

Tyhier Tyler was a drive killer in the first half. He tripped on the turf, tripped on his linemen, and had a crucial delay of game penalty that made 3rd and 7 in the red zone become 3rd and 12. The coaches keep hoping Tyler will run for a TD in the red zone but those only come from great blocking where he runs through a hole quickly and untouched. That does not happen when we play this Navy defense. We should have tried something else in these situations. Know your enemy and know yourself and you will not have to fear outcome of a thousand battles.

This game and final outcome remind me a lot of last year’s bowl loss to West Virginia. We went up early in that game too. We went up even more to start the 3rd quarter But then we played too conservatively on offense with TT at QB and fell behind. Christian Anderson came in to move us down the field well at the end of that game and then the coaches put TT back in and he could not finish a drive. I do not understand the infatuation with TT at QB In the red zone.

Army has a bad habit of playing too conservatively on offense with a lead or when behind by one score. We did that this year versus WKU, Miami of Ohio, Wisconsin, Air Force, and Liberty. We did it again yesterday versus Navy. We do not trust our offense as much as we trust our defense.

As always, Joe Iacono, GBK Writer/Analyst does a great job in breaking down the games, along with his post-game interviews with Head Coach Jeff Monken and players. Needless to say, yesterday's win over the Missouri Tigers of the SEC was no exception in Joe's coverage.
