Army has an agreement with ESPN Events to play in one of their 16 bowl games in 2021, 2023, and 2025. In 2020, 2022, and 2024 the Black Knights would go to the Independence Bowl. Army also has an option to play in the Mayo Bowl in some years.
We will know by Sunday afternoon where Army is playing. There are 83 teams eligible for 82 slots; CBS is predicting Ball State to not be picked.
Someone mentioned in another thread that our AD likely will avoid playing any of the bowls that are before Saturday, December 18th, to allow for TEEs (finals) and a week after the Navy game. That probably eliminates Army going to Cure (17), Boca Raton (18), and New Mexico (18); plus the opponents of the Bahamas Bowl (18) are already named.
So that leaves 12 bowls - however several may be locked up with certain conferences, like Idaho Potato (21) MAC/MWC, Fenway (29) ACC/AAC, Hawai’i (24) MWC/AAC, Las Vegas (30) P12/B10, and Texas (Jan 4) B12/SEC.
So possible ESPN Event bowls are Myrtle Beach (20), Frisco (21), Armed Forces (22), Gasparilla (23), Camellia (25), First Responder (28), and Birmingham (28). Of course, bowls, sponsors and networks wheel and deal teams in all the bowl games to attract fans, so almost any bowl outside the New Year’s Day are up for grabs. And I don’t expect a repeat of last year’s Bowl Sunday where like 15 teams decided they did not want to play Army.
