Let's put in perspective the situation going into the game:
Go ARMY and beat them all, especially Rice ! One game at a time.
- Temple was 10-4 last year while Army had not found how to win and was 2-10.
- Army opened as a 21.5 underdog and even after the line got better Army was at best a 14.5 dog depending on who you read.
- Temple was said to have too much firepower with a four year starting QB and an all-AAC running back plus a solid defense, and that Army might only be able to keep it close.
- Pass Defense: Grade = B+ / A-
- Better than anticipated with a four year starter that during the game became the all-time passing leader at Temple.
- Held the four year starter to 168 yards on 12/26 completions (46%) and a big three INTs.
- Army pressured him into mistakes with a hard pass rush and four sacks for minus 19 yards. Army prevented Temple's passing to dominate the game.
- Our defensive backs (to me) never looked out of position and did not get beat deep.
- Run Defense: Grade A-
- Granted their all-AAC runner was out but the back-ups had some ability and looked good at times.
- Held Temple to just 83 yards net and they ran 52% of the time. A 3.0 yds per carry average.
- Linebackers were very active ; Timpf lead with 8 tackles, Aukerman was my defensive MVP with two sacks, and another TFL, King was active and pressured the QB, Brinson contained well and had an INT.
- I did not hear hardly any mentions of the NT position, but as a whole the D showed up.
- Pass Offense: Grade D
- 2/5 total but no interceptions.
- The two completions were short routes while the pass selection seemed to attempt to go after deeper routes (and all to Poe ?).
- Seems Army would benefit more if they targeted backs out of the backfield and other quick out routes.
- Run Offense: Grade A
- Ran 93% of the time and was able to establish the FB early and often.
- Fullbacks carried 50 % of the time (34 of 67 runs) which is primary in Monken's system. They averaged 5.1 and a total of 173 yards.
- As a team Army netted 329 yards rushing allowing them to control the game with 35:48 time of possession. The pitch on the perimeter was good for some big gainers.
- The O-line was awesome and opened the holes all night long.
- All of this against a Temple Defense touted as really good one.
- Win the Fourth Quarter: Grade = A++
- As dominant in the fourth (second half) as I have seen or could hope for.
- Army was the team that beat up and wore out their opponent.
- Special Teams: F
- Just not good, and Monken has either got to coach them up of find more effective players.
- A blocked punt and the other was 39 yards.
- TWO for two missed FGs. Extra points were made but a few only sneaked inside the goal post.
- A dropped kick-off yet Drake shows promise in the return game.
- Bright spot was on kickoff coverage with a couple excellent tackles.
- Coaching: Grade A
- Davis had a great night calling plays. The rhythm was supper and the play selection was spot on most of the night.
- 7 of 14 on third downs and 2 for 2 on fourth downs.
- They had a good game plan and executed it to perfection.
- Coaches had the team ready with good fundamentals and a great positive attitude of confidence.
- They called a great fourth quarter.
- Final Conclusion: Grade A
- Great coaching,
- The team attitude, demeanor and execution was in the realm of "what we could only hope for" in the past yet we saw it in action last night.
- Dominating performance and Army has found fullbacks and an O-Line performance to be proud of.
- Our Defense is as predicted and our play against the run and pass will win games for Army this year.
- The QB position showed outstanding decision making and command of the offense.
- ZERO, I repeat ZERO turnovers.
Go ARMY and beat them all, especially Rice ! One game at a time.
