We will surely have an article or two surrounding the replacement of defensive coordinator Jay Bateman, who is now taking on a similar role with the title Co-DC for the North Carolina Tarheels.
From our perspective, and when we talking about a viable replacement, our conversation here on this platform starts internally.
Sounds pretty easy huh? I mean, when Urban Myers stepped away from his head coach position at Ohio State, the succession planning within the ranks of Buckeye Nation didn’t even need Athletic Director Gene Smith to look beyond the fortress of The Ohio State University, as they “promoted” OC Ryan Day to head coach.
As noted in BuckeyeGrove’s coverage of the OSU transition.
Then there's always the benefit of hiring from within, one that goes for any organization. Day is familiar with the program already, which helps both for transitional periods and on the recruiting trail.
"Our program does not need disruption. It does not need to blow up and have people come in and try and adapt to our standards of operation," Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said.
Meyer's vote of confidence and Day's track record aren't the only thing placing trust in Ohio State's next head coach. Smith also took the podium Tuesday, voicing his support for the new head of state.
"He had an opportunity to audition in a different way," Smith said. "Not relative to winning on the field, but how he mastered leading, not just the football staff, but everyone else around it."
However, within the ranks of the Army Black Knights football brotherhood, such a transition may not be as easy, and could actually could reveal a conundrum.

- If the decision is to go internal, will the program lose coaches that will feel slighted?
- Who is Bateman taking with him, if anyone at all?
- Some feel that safety coach John Loose is the most likely candidate for DC since he has been a DC before and has been with the Army program the longest. But is Loose is getting tired?

- However you have defensive line coach Chad Wilt, who is the protégé of Bateman and many argue that he is the best coach, best teacher and recruiter. But, will Bateman take him away?
- You can’t forget Kevin Corless, who has been with Monken the longest and has produced some great linebackers ... but he has not stepped out of Monken's shadow.
