Just some general commentary about bowls the last few days. Feel free to add your thoughts/questions/comments.
These are obviously mostly observations and opinions so it isn’t necessary to refute anything I say and give me 10 reasons why eliminating the ServPro First Responders Bowl due to contractual agreements can’t happen .
If you have productive thoughts and comments of your own on the bowl season, please add them here.
1) Cheez-it Bowl: Best thing about this game were all the Cheez-It references . The announcers and Sports Center’s team seriously couldn’t keep straight faces because A) We all love Cheez-Its and B) It was one of the worst exhibitions of offensive football I have seen in a really, really long time. Maybe worse than Houston’s showing against Hammersticks and the Bad Boys. I actually stayed up and watched that whole game. Those two offenses should be forced to return their bowl swag and go home empty handed.
2) Teams with head coaches who depart seem to struggle. Minnesota stomped GT and PJ Fleck looked like he was in CPJ’s headset that he rarely wears. It was not a good showing for Monk’s mentor or his troops and Fleck is one of the best young coaches in the land (although not super young).
Didn’t see Temple/Duke last night because I was making a 13-hour drive home (yippee). I did see the score this morning. Looks like old Cut put a complete beatdown on the Geoff Collinsless Temple Owls. Kinda feel bad for Temple as they seem like a stepping stone program for good coaches. Duke may be the most bipolar team in college football. They looked awesome against us, got shut out by a mediocre Wake Forest team, and then hung 56 on Temple. This reinforces how hard college football coaches’ jobs are. I wouldn’t want my career in the hands of a bunch of 18-22 year old kids!
3) Speaking of ex-Temple coaches, Matt Rhule’s Baylor team had a nice win last night over a feisty Vanderbilt squad. He has that program moving in the right direction.
4) Speaking of ex-coaches coaching their old teams after accepting new jobs, I have seen 2 coaches now who got head jobs elsewhere stay on to coordinate their former teams in the bowl game, so I refute my own comments about Bateman. Lucky for us, we didn’t really need him.
5) WTH is wrong with Miami??? The mighty Canes have fallen and they can’t get up. As much as I like Mark Richt I am wondering if his message is getting through and it now looks like UGA 100% absolutely made the right move getting rid of him and hiring Kirby. There were a few fans here at GBK who were fretting playing the Canes in a bowl game because of their supposed “athleticism.” That team sucks and we would have beer trucked them as bad as Wisconsin did.
6) Cancelling the ServPro First Responders Bowl was weak sauce. Like someone was going to get hit with lightning or they couldn’t hold the game the next day. On one hand we have kids skipping out of bowl games to “prep for the draft” whatever that is supposed to mean. They should just come out and say it. You have 0 loyalty to your teammates and are a selfish football player. Then you have an actual bowl game telling the kids “uh, just kidding. Bowl games aren’t really important. We were just here to make a bunch of money. So you go ahead and do the same thing.” That bowl game should be eliminated next year and replaced with another sponsor and bowl game.
7) After watching a myriad of “tempo/spread/pro style” offenses sputter, turn the ball over, and go nowhere, I love being a fan of a program that embraces the triple option. I posted on my FB that Army should be ranked in the Top 15 and one of my FB friends (not a real friend) posted that while we had a great season we didn’t deserve to be in the Top 15 because we couldn’t pass the ball especially against “descent” defenses (gotta love that UGA education). To which I sent him Herm EDWARDS famous “You play to win the game” video.
Army will always be the Rodney of major college football because Monk does things differently and people can’t deal with different. I, for one, don’t give a rip. As the great Al Davis said, “Just win baby.” I love our coach and our program. I love the boulder sized chip on the shoulder our kids play with (check out Kelvin Hopkins twitter feed if you want more info). I love that we are different. I love that Army is the #NCOT (didn’t know what that meant until the Real Brent Davis spelled it out this week). I love that whoever Army plays is in for a 60-minute war and they better bring their lunch bucket.
You can have your fancy spread offenses and your cute play cards with weirdo pictures on them. I’ll take the triple option all. Day. Long.
