WE ARE BACK ... as GoBlackKnights.com brings you Inside The Huddle, which will be a weekly feature once again with some of our game day tidbits.

In doing so, we will share this version on The 12th Knight message board and will add weekly tidbits from Army Black Knights’ football items all the way to recruiting updates. These are blurs and tweet type subjects that we view don’t require a full and comprehensive associated article ... although one may be forthcoming down the road.

Needless to say, we encourage/welcome your comments and thoughts surrounding any and all topics that we bring to you here. So, let’s get started.

The Army Black Knights are just one day away from hosting the Green Wave of Tulane and that’s pretty much their football temperament .... “a wave” and all you have to do is just asked the Houston Cougars, who would probably tell you that playing Tulane is more like going against a tidal wave.

With that being said, Army is going to have to be on their “A” game this Saturday and there may be a need to tap into the depth chart at specific positions, for various reasons.

So let’s take a look Inside The Huddle for a few game day tibits

Yes, everyone knows the names Artice Hobbs and Kell Walker. This duo has played the majority of the snaps so far this season at the two slotback positions, but the staff is continuing to develop other guys, but who are they?

Malik Hancock is one of them and then there’s Dominic Distefano. You can add Brandon Walters name to the list and we know the staff feels pretty good about him as a player. And we can’t forget about AJ Howard.

But honestly, there’s not a “next guy up” right now. But when you look at the aforementioned group and potential reps, they will be use in different roles ... depending on what the play call is. And what that comes down to is that it appears that they all have different skill sets.

Offensive Line

As Coach Monken mentioned, the offensive line going into this Saturday’s Tulane game is pretty much a wait and see who gets healthy enough to contribute.

But the hope is that everyone will be available, although several players up front have missed some time. Ultimately, Offensive coordinator and his crew will be looking to develop more depth on the O-line. The by-product of having several players banged up has been the development of some of the younger guys on the O-line, which having the off-week helped nurture players back to health, as well as groom some of the youth.

Return Of Hopkins

Obviously when we talk about getting, probably the key performer to look for with a thumbs up is captain and senior QB Kelvin Hopkins and having him back is huge for the offense. Getting ready for this run of 7 games in a row, the coaches have readily stated that they were glad that he didn’t play over the past two weeks, along with being ready for Tulane.

Fullbacks

At fullback and against Morgan State, it appears that all the B-backs received an opportunity to get in their share of reps. Of course, lots of talk surrounding frosh fullback Anthony Adkins. Will he factor in this weekend? We aren’t 100% sure just yet, but his being worked in ... however, there is little doubt that he is one of the key fullbacks of the future for Army.

Another notable up and coming fullback is Jacobi Buchanan, who the staff really like relative to his potential and upside. With five (5) B-backs dress for the Morgan State game two weeks ago, Buchanan was the odd man out, but don’t let that fool you ... this young man is a player to recognized with and he is a load.

And of course there is sophomore Cade Barnard. If we called it, we would say that this big buy is 2B when it comes to the depth chart, with Sandon McCoy being 2A as of now ... with both running behind senior Connor Slomka.

Receivers

Although this group hasn’t touch the ball much, one guy we think the fans need to keep an eye on is sophomore Micheal Roberts. He’s had a great week of practice, making plays and he is truly developing.

“He’s a guy who has a chance to be physical in the run game and avoid people,” shared OC Brent Davis. “It’s just a matter of him continuing to get better.”

Defense

Defensively, there are injuries to overcome, but this week of practice showed that this group is locked in and the latter part of practice week has been spent cleaning some “stuff up”, as the team overall will be facing probably their most athletic competition this season.

Recruits On Hand

We are expecting several prospects on hand and we are anticipating at least 1 or 2 commitments this weekend as well.

Here are a few notables that have confirmed their attendance:

There will be several prospects (committed/uncommitted) on for the projected sold-out crowd. Look for DB, Cam Nash; LB, Bryson Daily; OL, Jackson Filipowicz (Army commit).
