With the opening of spring practice (2/25) around the corner, which players do you think need to turn it up in order to establish their position on the depth chart?
There is little doubt that GBK’s Gordon Larson does a tremendous job across the board, but the insight that he provides for the “Looking Forward” Series, that covers every position is one of my favorites.
But as good as Gordon’s projections are, some would believe that spring practice doesn’t dictate what the depth chart will eventually look like.
From where I sit, I sincerely believe that spring practice is, for the most part, about individual player development versus establishing depth charts.
You may take another step further by saying that despite the complexity of Army’s triple-option offense and the Black Knights’ 3-4-4 defense, it’s not about establishing any offensive or defensive playbook beyond a base package. Of course, that’ll come in August, during pre-season camp.
Oh yeah, Army’s opening game of the 2022 season is September 3rd, which is 6-months away, so it is pretty safe to say the first opponent (Coastal Carolina) of the upcoming season … the staff is putting little to zero focus/energy on another program. Although it may be safe to say that Navy is always on the minds of the Army coaching staff.
Where the focus will be during the spring is the fundamental and technical improvement of the players, especially with the limited time that can be allocated during the fall because much time is spent around game planning and other prep-type work for that Saturday’s opponent.
So this spring will allow for players to not only develop, but prove to the coaching staff that have done and/or doing so.
For example and from my perspective … at the cornerback positions, I’m looking forward to Bo Nicolas-Paul, Daelan Smith, and Damon Washington to have the type of developmental spring to show they can contribute this upcoming season.
Army Fans - Your Turn To Chime In:
So the proverbial question that we ask YOU the Army fans, is which players really need to take that next step (aka - Improvement) in their game/development to make some noise this spring and summer and hence, make an impact on the depth chart?
P.S. There are several dark horses, especially freshmen & sophomores, who will surprise and turn heads this spring. Which of those players do you think will take their talents to the next level?
