Agonizing that we didnt get off to a better start. The half back option pass was wide open and if Walker hits it, maybe we are not chasing the game as much.
The Defensive story is that they kept everything in front of them, tacked and hit. We got some people to the ground but the hitting and intensity was all AFA. I can barely remember a broken tackle.
On offense, they dusted off a soph who had 1 NCAA pass and he looked equal to or better than our experienced clear #1. There was one game breaker on the field and they had him - Robinette. They are more multiple, a much more diverse playbook. They could move the ball in their base offense, we could not.
It appears we are getting out coached. Look at what the AFA Def did to us and Navy, after playing in 4 time zones over the last 24 days. Calhoun is really a master once they get the lead and you start chasing the game. As an aside - at the end of these games I wish Monken would run more of our offense rather than a series of Hail Mary's to Edgar. The second to last drive, we should have taken a bit more time, get in the end zone or get a FG and then onside kick. It is only demoralizing for him to keep asking AB to do things he cant do as he racks up interception after interception. Let alone the ridiculous first down challenge which was just desperate and embarrassing. There are ways to close out a loss to make it less humiliating.
Vs Academies. There is a little bit of progress there. Some more recruiting wins, last years Navy game. But overall if you take REs last 3 years and JMs 3, it has been pretty modest. It was really driven home today for those of us that were flipping back and forth to the Navy / ND game. They just seem an inch taller, 10 lbs heavier, a step faster and incrementally better at execution. Given this years results on both sides, if we cant stay in this game vs this AFA at home with a newbie QB, when will we ever knock them off?
