Summer camp about a month away – with opener down in Durham in just 60 days. Last year’s team was outstanding – dare I say this year’s team can be even better? Our 2018 Team has all the pieces – all the components (albeit some unproven) for a “perfect storm” season. Overly optimistic? I don’t think so – but we may need a little help from the Army Football Gods again!
  • Haven’t seen this much depth, toughness and talent with running backs in a half century! Woolfolk, Davidson, Holt and Slomka are all punishing runners capable of wearing down the opposition – they take the old football phrase “keep those legs moving” to a new level. And then we have Walker (if he’s not playing QB), Asberry and Cooper. We all know what Walker’s capable of, and I think we’ll see really good production from Asberry – but I have a feeling Cooper’s going to wreak havoc this year.
  • Last year Brinson seemed just ½ step away from a sack on so many plays. This year I think he comes up big.
  • Last year’s O-line was special, but I don’t think we’ll see much drop-off with this year’s group (i.e. Holland anchoring again, Deaton, Johnson et al.) – if any.
  • Our defensive backs – see my first bullet (i.e. haven’t seen this much depth, toughness and potential talent in a half century). I think we’ll see much improved pass-coverage, but Gibson, Riley and McClinton are all really strong against the run which I believe may help propel us to top 15 against the run status
  • Christiansen and Nachtigal are both strong tacklers, good athletes and very quick side line to side line (just imagine the blitz possibilities – along with Riley, McClinton and Gibson).
  • More legitimate impact players/ game changers then I can ever recall.
  • A real winning culture that’s just beginning to gain momentum (thanks Coach Monken)
Here’s what’s I find most intriguing about this year’s team though – if Hopkins becomes a legitimate passing threat (which I think he will) this team will be special. One other thing. Don’t think the Sooners have had much experience defending the option – they better be ready to defend ours.
