I’m optimistic !

I am less concern this year with our record versus developing outstanding football players. Let’s be honest, we have some really great guys (student/athletes), but position by position, we are hurting across the board. What I am optimistic about is our young and upcoming talent.

Wait until you see Kenneth Brinson next year after a year of S&C and the same can be said for so many freshmen …. even some like James Gibson who has all the athletic tools, but probably still needs time to adjust the defensive schemes.

I think with the maturation of running backs such as Drake, Asberry and eventually Drue Harris at FB -- Ahmad Bradshaw will have the weapons on offense -- assuming of course that Brent Davis ups his game with regard to play calling.

My Take on the Good and the Bad

The "Down" and the Bad: (Essentially the offense)
Eleven first downs ?
Only 186 rush yards with a 3.4 yards per carry?
Only three passes ?
Only 240 total yards ?
Only 5 of 14 third downs and 0 for 1 4th downs?
Twenty-five FB carries and only 75 yards.....
Missed field goal.
Losing the second half !!
The "UP" side or positives:
No turnovers
Three interceptions
Time of Possession
Again - Andrew King
Five freshman starters. (Black, RB Brinson, DE, Jackson, CB, Kurtz, LT Nieves, LG
Significant contributions and reps from Fr .
Drue Harris, Christian Drake, Brandon Jackson
Rush yards, 2x Interceptions, Sack, TD
Nineteen freshmen saw the field.
And we have yet to see: Gibby Gibson (S), Raymond Wright (DL), or Sheldon Johnson (DL)
Yet we still almost won....

Bottom-line is simply this ...

…. we need much better football players, especially at the key positions.

We haven’t had an impactful NT/NG in years. We haven’t had a game changing QB since now with Bradshaw and the jury is still somewhat out on him, although I think he’s the guy.

We haven’t had a pure and consistent pass rusher on the edge since Josh McNary.

I can’t even recall us have a WR in decades who was a threat after he caught the ball, let alone someone who could actually and consistently pull it down when thrown to him.

MLB, well, I like Andrew King a lot and he is the only Steve Anderson type inside linebacker who actually will hit someone and then have then looking for the next hit as the game goes on. Timpf is a quality LB, but more of a tackler (nothing wrong with that) versus someone who is a HITTER.

Our safety play is horrible and I don’t care how many tackles that England has which for the most is a by product of our poor play at the 1st & 2nd levels defensively. His angles are poor and he’s dropped to INTs so far. Xavier Moss is obviously athletic, but like England his angles are bad and he won’t hit or tackle if you paid him to do so.

Carnegie is a good player at CB, but without Jenkins out there, he almost looks lost. I know he has switched over to the boundary, but as a 4-year starter, I was expecting more.

We have some good talent in the pipeline, but my patience is wearing thin.
