The Inside Stuff Official Army-Air Force Game (11/4) Prediction Thread

Yes, there is a GBK thread (GBK: Predicting Army Black Knights' 2023 Campaign) whereby Joe Iacono gives his prediction of the upcoming season, which kicked off on 9/2.

And yes, here we are again (aka Déjà vu ) where the Black Knights are coming off of what many are saying is the most embarrassing loss by the Black Knights during the Jeff Monken Era, as Army was taken down 21-14 by a UMass team that entered the game at 1-7.

Now the Black Knights head to Colorado to take on undefeated and No. 17 Air Force and enter the game as 18. underdogs.

I don't know if the term "must win" is even appropriate at this time as much as I would say "must-compete" ... because again, we have been saying over the past several weeks that “This weekend’s game is a “must-win” for the Black Knights.

With being said, chime in with your prediction for Saturday's upcoming contest.

Lineup Carousel on Offense

Injuries are always a factor, but one thing that has struck me is how our offense seems to have no rhyme or reason to starters. Hayden Reed is a beast against UTSA and then disappears. Tyson Riley is used episodically. Jacobi Buchanan - sometimes a huge presence (i.e. Syracuse) and then sometimes not even in the mix.

Just feels like the offense doesn't have a stable core.

What has been lost in less than 2 years

This game contains:

Multiple Army QBs who can hit open receivers
A front seven on defense who can match up with an SEC opponent
Sacks and pressure on the opposing QB
Running plays that start under center and rarely lose yards
An offense that possesses the ball and the defense that forces turnovers
A patient offense that can come from behind and win
4th quarter warriors
Special teams that win games

Rule changes did not cost us all of these things.
We traded away our milk cow for some spread option magic beans.
Our defense has regressed big time.

I want my football team back.

Generally, I think all-time great coaches can do 3 things:
  1. Turn a program around
  2. Sustain success
  3. Retool and rethink when the competitive landscape changes
Coach K hits all three especially when he retooled in the 1-and-done era. Saban is an all-timer. Dabo hits first two but has fallen behind in the era of NIL and transfer portal. This is why I always felt Coach Ken at Navy was over-rated; he never did 1 or 3. As an aside, it's why I think Matt Rhule is one of the best college (not NFL) coaches out there. Watch Nebraska over the next couple of year. Lance Leipold might be one of the best of the best.

Monken has done 1 and 2. Now he needs to do 3. This is going to be a big test for him, his staff, and the players. In 2023, we are one of the worst teams in college football. The transfer portal is not coming to save us. If he gets this done, he too will be an all-timer.
