The Inside Stuff GBK March Madness Thread

It's that time of year for you fans who can get pumped up for more than one sport. I happen to be taken in the Iona-Alabama game and the team from New Rochelle, New York who are coached by Rick Pinto are holding their own.

But, I have to take a break from the game and get back to my yard work .... lovely New Jersey weather today.

OT: Shout Out to Army Hockey

Just wanted to go a little off topic and share some excitement around the Army Hockey program. Several things of note. The team is in the Atlantic Hockey semifinals tonight against Canisius. We bring a 13 game unbeaten streak into this game. We're ranked #19 in the country. And we have a real shot at making the NCAA tourney for the first time ever.

We get an automatic bid if we win the Atlantic Hockey tourney. Even if we don't win the AH tourney, I think we have a real shot to get in. A win tonight against Canisius would likely be enough. Also, Coach Riley was named as the AH Coach of the Year this week!

If you haven't watched this team then you are missing some excitement. We have some scorers, with 3 high-quality lines. We have a skilled corps of defensemen and our goaltending has been stellar. No matter what happens this weekend... this has been a great year for Army Hockey. Congrats, guys! And good luck this weekend. Go Army!

Army to Play in CBI Tourney, March 22

It appears that Army's 12-9 record has earned a berth in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI). https://www.gazellegroup.com/main/cbi/

This is the 13th year that the CBI has been held. This year it is an 8-Team, 3-day (Mar 22-24), single elimination tournament with all games being played at a single site--The Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, FL.

Army will tip-off on Monday evening, 22 March, 8:30 p.m. against Bellarmine (13-7) out of Louisville, KY, and a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.

If Army wins, they would play in the semifinal the next day, Tuesday, against the winner of the Longwood VA (Big South, 12-16) vs. Pepperdine CA (West Coast, 12-12) game.

The other quarterfinal games are: Stetson (Atlantic Sun, 11-14) vs. Bowling Green (MAC, 14-11), and Coastal Carolina (Sun Belt, 16-7) vs. Bryant (NEC, 15-6).

Washington State and U of TX San Antonio also received CBI invitations, but declined to participate.

Live streaming of the CBI will be via FloHoops, but it requires a monthly or annual subscription.

Army Basketball's last trip to a tournament was in 2016, when they finished the regular season 19-14, but they were eliminated in the first round game by NJIT, 79-65.

There has been a lot of chatter on the message board surrounding the loss (various reasons) of a few of the team’s 3-star 2021 commits and rightfully so. But the Army fan base should really be excited about Jordan Burrell - he is a player for sure.

So yesterday, we had an opportunity to catch up with him.

Question from a casual Army fan

Good afternoon. I was hoping you guys could clear something up for me. I've been paying a lot of attention to recruiting lately and I noticed that you guys sign a lot of players. Rivals shows you guys signed 105 recruits in 2021, 89 in 2020, 85 in 2019 and 95 in 2018. I understand that being a military academy that scholarship numbers really aren't the same and that recruits are probably paid for by other means. My question is in regards to the sheer numbers of recruits you all sign. There are only 85 "scholarship spots" and I read that a team can carry around 125 active players on their roster.

I see where you guys have around 160 some players on your roster. What does ARMY do with the players once they get to they get to their mark? So out of the 105 you singed in 2021 how many will actually make the roster and what happens with the rest? Do they all redshirt? Do you guys have 100+ guys on campus waiting to be called up to the roster? Do they practice? If they don't make the roster do they just become members of the ARMY? Do they transfer to other institutions?

I'm just genuinely curious.

Also to clarify my title. I graduated from Marshall University and the Thundering Herd is my team. My dad served in the ARMY so I pull for you guys especially against NAVY.

Thanks in advance guys.
