I had the opportunity to drop in on Army Head Coach Jeff Monken this morning at West Point, and needless to say and no surprise …. He is anxious and excited about Saturday’s contest against rival, Navy.
We talked about the Ohio State-Michigan game being canceled and of course, the Black Knights like any other program is fighting through the possibility of players being tested positive for COVID, which of course is a concern for Coach Monken and staff.
I also shared with him that we are taking a hit by some of the fans on the GBK site that we are throwing up softball questions to him and we both chuckled because we know that the picture is a little bigger than some might recognize when it comes to what is revealed vs not revealed.... although he completely respects and understands the fans eagerness to know more.
We conversed about several topics, but one that I thought interesting and worth mentioning, surrounds Navy’s quarterback, Xavier Arline, who Coach Monken believes will be the starter.
Coach pointed out that they recruited Arline, but believed they lost out to Navy for his talents because the QB was almost promised the starting role if he were to commit. Clearly, Coach Monken would never attempt to put that type of narrative on the table, especially when the Army program had several quality quarterbacks in the system. The only thing that he could guarantee Arline would be the opportunity to compete for the spot.
